It’s wonderful that an up-front investment of as little as $500 can result in savings of as much as $20,000 down the road. It’s also encouraging to hear that CAPABLE has a promising future no matter who wins the Presidential election. Thank you for all the good news in this post!

Mary wrote a new post, A Look at the Numbers – Confidence Crash for Aging in Place 6 months ago
No, I am not talking about the distressing number of rising covid cases. Maybe it is because of the pandemic that fewer seniors now see themselves as being able to successfully age in place. On the front side a […]

Wow! I’m amazed at that drop in self-confidence regarding the ability to stay in one’s home. My close friends have all said that the pandemic has convinced them that they MUST find ways to stay in their homes, rather than deal with the perils of congregate living. I, too, have been bombarded by those flashy postcards from assisted living places. I guess it will take some time (and an effective vaccine) before we see how this plays out.

I’m curious whether any research has been done on the percentage of home-sharing arrangements that are successful. I love the idea of home sharing, but the home-sharing arrangements that I have first-hand knowledge about haven’t worked for more than a few months. I hope my experience is the exception.

Fascinating post! One thing I continue to observe is a big income gap among older adults who do and don’t use more advanced technology. Even if a lower-income senior is able to afford the initial acquisition cost, the device tends to fall into disuse when it needs to be updated or repaired. For lower-income older adults without nearby tech-savvy children, the cost of a tech consultant to put things right may just be too high. Any thoughts on this?
-
Mary replied 1 year, 5 months ago
This is a very valid point. Many seniors can get frustrated when they have to change passwords, update and as you point out, seek help. Consumer Cellular has a simpler interface for phones with good customer service. For the more complicated AI interfaces, you have to get past a trust barrier as well. But the staying connected part will become more critical as time goes on. Senior centers and community colleges need to offer Senior focused classes on using tech.

Very important information! Would appreciate examples of OTC medications that can increase fall risk.
-
Mary replied 1 year, 6 months ago
The list of prescription rx is so long as to be overwhelming. BUT for OTC these are the categories:
Allergy medicines
Antinauseants
Cold remedies
Cough preparations
Muscle relaxants
Painkillers
Sleeping pills
More specifically anything that has a PM after it (not good for cognition either)
This group includes a large number of drugs that are anticholinergic, like most over-the-counter sleeping aids and many other prescription drugs
These drugs include: antihistamines like Benadryl, “PM” versions of over-the-counter pain relievers (Nyquil, Tylenol PM)
